Both municipal and national elections depend on poll workers. Local residents volunteer to serve their communities during each election cycle, giving voters assurance that their votes will be counted honestly. Their commitment and diligence serve as the cornerstone of a reliable electoral process.
The number of poll workers required to staff the next elections is currently insufficient in several local counties. Vet the Vote, a nonpartisan civic movement, started an effort to motivate veterans to assist in addressing the national poll worker shortfall in order to address this issue and create a new civic tradition. Vet the Vote successfully recruited over 63,000 veterans to participate as poll workers by collaborating with the NFL, civic organizations, and more than 30 veteran and military-family assistance organizations.
Vet the Vote and the Secretary of State’s Office are working together this year to build on this accomplishment and inspire additional military family members and veterans to work as poll workers. This program emphasizes civic engagement and community service over politics.
As more than 200,000 veterans and active military communities volunteer to serve, they serve as a clear reminder of the value of civic involvement and a potent civic role model for the general public. As role models, they encourage others to participate in the democratic process by volunteering, voting, or taking on more active community service responsibilities.
