United States, Los Angeles (AFP): Is the release of Westeros’ dragons on the big screen imminent? Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, two trade publications, revealed Thursday that at least one “Game of Thrones” film is still in the very early phases of development.
Over its eight seasons, from 2011 to 2019, the original HBO television series “Game of Thrones” won a record 59 Emmys and became a worldwide cultural phenomenon.
The popular series about brutal, rivalry-filled aristocratic families, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” has already given rise to the TV offshoot “House of the Dragon,” and further small-screen adaptations are reportedly in the works.
However, parent company Warner Bros. Discovery has been against bringing the franchise to theaters, even though Martin and “Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have previously talked about possible films based on the universe.
The success of properties that have alternated between large and small screens, like “The Batman,” “Dune,” and the planned “Harry Potter” TV series, may have finally spurred a change, according to the Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.
According to the source, Warner Bros. “has been quietly developing at least one film” set in the “Thrones” universe.
According to Deadline, there have only been “preliminary discussions” and the potential film does not yet have any performers attached.
“On this, we have nothing to say,” a Warner representative told AFP.
